Lists like this already exist— all claiming to have compiled the most wanderlust-inducing songs to have ever been made. I often find them uninspiring. That’s the unfortunate truth. There have been countless times I’ve tried travel lusting to these songs. Alas, to no avail. I hate to say that even Spotify’s many travel themed playlists fall short for me.
All of us have varying tastes for music in general. There is no guideline for what makes travel inspiring songs. What one might like another might not. That’s all.
Songs do not necessarily need to be about a destination to promote wanderlust. What works for me is a combination of ambient noise, sweeping strings, soulful voices, folky tunes. Subject matter is irrelevant. As long as the feeling is there, that’s what counts.
With that said, here is my list of transporting tracks currently on repeat:
Naan Nee – Shakthi Shree, Dheekshitha
Morocco – Moon Taxi
Winter Song – The Head and the Heart
Fire In The Middle – Nightmares On Wax
My Only Swerving – El Ten Eleven
Now We Are Free – Lisa Gerrard
Celebration – The Game
Homesick – Kings of Convenience
Hoppípolla – Sigur Rós
Barcelona – George Ezra
Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand – Primitive Radio Gods
Patch Kids – Bryce Vine
I Wanna Go – Summer Heart
Coming Home – Leon Bridges
I encourage you to give them a try. Perhaps, they’ll fuel your traveler’s itch. Maybe not.
I’ve made this playlist accessible via Spotify.
What are your favorite wanderlust inducing songs?
